The Golden Empire Amateur Radio Society (GEARS) is the heart of amateur radio in Chico and Butte County, California. Our members come from all walks of life — united by a shared enthusiasm for technology, communication, and community service.
GEARS is an active and welcoming amateur radio club dedicated to every aspect of ham radio — HF, VHF, UHF, and beyond. Our operators enjoy everything from the nostalgic rhythm of Morse code to cutting-edge digital and satellite communications. We’re proud to represent the full range of interests in the hobby — whether you’re a ragchewer, a contester, an emergency communicator, or an experimenter building your first antenna.
As a non-profit organization, GEARS exists to:
• Promote radio knowledge, education, and skill development • Encourage cooperation and friendship among amateur operators • Support public service communications in times of need • Advance the general interest and welfare of the amateur radio service.
We’re committed not only to the technical and recreational sides of ham radio — but also to the spirit of public service that defines it.
GEARS proudly provides communications support for a variety of community events throughout the year, including:
• Bike races and endurance events • Charity walks and fundraisers • Local and regional public events • Our members are trained, dependable, and ready to assist whenever reliable communication is needed.
When the community calls, GEARS answers — on the air and in the field.
Education has always been at the core of what we do. GEARS promotes the recreational and educational purposes of amateur radio while striving to elevate the standards of operating practices and ethics in our hobby.
We offer license testing, training resources, and mentorship for new hams — ensuring that the next generation of operators can learn, experiment, and serve with confidence.
GEARS was founded in August 1939 by eleven amateur radio operators from across the Northern Sacramento Valley. From its earliest days, the club focused on fostering communication, technical experimentation, and emergency readiness. More than eight decades later, GEARS continues to uphold that legacy — embracing modern technology while preserving the rich traditions that make amateur radio so enduring.
“Connecting people, sharing knowledge, and serving our community — since 1939.”
Whether you’re new to radio or a lifelong operator, GEARS welcomes you to be part of our story. Join our meetings, check into our nets, or lend your voice to our next event — and help keep the Golden Empire on the air.
